GLBT in Recovery has been a vital part of our community for over 30 years and I want to assure you that our mission will not change. This organization, which was established as safe haven for GLBT people in recovery, is only evolving to keep up with the times.
I personally want to thank the founders of this organization and those who have worked so hard throughout the years to keep GLBT in Recovery going forward.
Our reasons for the name change are many and this decision was not made lightly or quickly. The board felt that we needed a new name that was inclusive of all members of our community regardless of where they fell on the gender or sexual identity continuum. We also felt that just adding letters (GLBTQA, etc.) was not the answer. Out & Sober Minnesota wants everyone under our umbrella not just people who identify as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgender.
We will continue to sponsor social events to help people build and maintain clean and sober networks. We will also continue to present informational and educational workshops and activities that provide tools that are useful not only for those in early recovery but also for old timers. Most importantly we will have fun. If you ask people who have attended our events or volunteered with us in some capacity I am sure you will find they had a lot of fun.
Our annual MinneSober event will also continue, as will our presence at the Gopher State Roundup and Spring Fling at Pride Institute. We will also continue to be fiscally sponsored by Rainbow Health Initiative.
We are also continuing to look for new ways to serve this community. The Out & Sober Minnesota board has worked to identify short, medium, and long term goals as part of our strategic plan which will be released at a later date. We will also be looking at results from our community survey to get new ideas for events and look for issues or concerns that need to be addressed.
I want to thank my friend and longtime GLBT in Recovery supporter Cliff Robinette for the fabulous graphic design work he did on our new logo. Thanks also to Alfred Walking Bull (our board secretary) and Jonathan W. (board member at large) for putting the finishing touches on the logo and getting it print ready. Most of all I want to thank the Board of Directors of Out & Sober Minnesota for the months of hard work it took to complete this process. This was a true example of teamwork, open mindedness, and flexibility.
On behalf of the Out & Sober Minnesota Board I welcome you to our organization and thank you for your ongoing support.
